Did my Part I at Dolphin in 1974, then straight to Otway as LRO for my Part III. Really enjoyed my time, particularly on the 1975 Rimpac trip. Went to the UK as part of Orion's commissioning crew, and had a great time. Got sidetracked into the spook stream (in hindsight, I'm, still a bit pissed off about that), so got drafted away from routine boat running, but did a few trips on Orion and Otama. Currently living in Adelaide with my wife, Anna, and enjoying retirement. For a couple of reasons I withdrew a bit from the submarine community a few years ago, but really happy to be back, and looking forward to meeting up again.

I’ve been a civvie now for longer than I was in boats which was 17 years. I still think civvies don’t know the meaning of or how to have fun.

Kept being asked if I missed boats. Got to admit I didn’t know until I went on the Onslow in Darling Harbour. Answer? It brought back the best memories a guy could ask for and serving with you guys was the best thing I ever did.

Would still be in boats today if the bastards hadn't paid me off on compassionate grounds. Who remembers the great shit tank explosion on Otway in NZ in 70-71? I had the honour of being the last crew member ever in Otway, as a firie, putting out the fire in her hull on the wharf at GI when she was being scrapped. Ian MacDougal was on the wharf to pay his last respects as well.
