In Memory of

CPOMTP4SM BARRY THOMAS WRIGHT R58290

May He Rest In Peace

The SAA is saddened to advise of the passing of former SAA member Barry (Shiner) Wright on the 3rd of July last year.
Barry was born in Brisbane in July 1944, and he enlisted in the RAN in July 1961 as a Mechanic Engines. He served in the frigates HMAS Diamantina and Warrego and in the Troop Transport HMAS Sydney. Whilst serving in Sydney he made two “Vung Tau Ferry” runs to Vietnam. He was promoted to LME in 1966 and in 1967 he was selected to undergo Mechanician Training at HMAS Nirimba as an Acting POME. In early 1969 he was rated as a Mechanician 2nd Class (Petty Officer), returning to HMAS Sydney for a short posting before posting to the UK in mid-1969 for Submarine Training.

Barry served in the Royal Navy Submarine HMS Olympus where he qualified as a submariner. In 1970 he returned to Australia where he served in HMAS Oxley, Otway, Ovens and Onslow and according to his SAA application form “in HMAS Platypus briefly!” He will be remembered by some for his excellent work in the Platypus Weapons Workshop.

On retirement from the RAN Barry lived in Rosebud Victoria before moving to Dalmeny in southern NSW. He married twice, both wives predeceasing him.

Chief Petty Officer Barry Wright passed away in Tuross Head NSW. The SAA extends its condolences to Barry’s extended family and friends.
