COMMODORE PETER BROUGHTON HATCHER CSC RAN (RTD)


Peter Hatcher was born in February 1952, and he entered the Royal Australian Naval College on the first of January 1968 as a 15 year old Cadet Midshipman.
He completed an Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of NSW before undertaking training onboard the Aircraft Carrier HMAS Melbourne in January 1974.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1975.
In late 1975 he posted to the United Kingdom to complete his Weapons Electrical Application Course followed by submarine training at HMS Dolphin.
He returned to Australia in 1977 where he served as a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer at HMAS Platypus and later in HMAS Otway when the submarine completed its SWUP refit.
Hatcher returned to the UK on exchange with the UK in May 1982, where he was promoted to LCDR in July of that year.
He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in the 1996 Australia Day Honours List.
Later significant postings included as the Chief Staff Officer Engineering in Maritime Headquarters Australia, and as the Chief Naval Engineer in Canberra.
Peter’s death notice in the Canberra Times states that he “was a much-loved husband, brother, uncle and friend.
A true gentleman, golfer, cat lover and gardener.” Commodore Peter Hatcher passed away in Canberra on the 16th of November 2024 after a long battle with illness.
He was privately cremated.
