In Memory ofLSEMWRSM BARRY JOHN (TED) AFFLECK R64663![]() May He Rest In PeaceTed was born in Brisbane in November 1947 and enlisted in the RAN in September 1965 for nine years. At the end of his recruit training at HMAS Cerberus he was rated as an Ordinary Seaman Electrical Mechanic (EM) and posted to the Light Carrier HMAS Melbourne for at sea training. Whilst Ted was in Melbourne the ship completed two supply operations to Vietnam. He returned to Cerberus in August 1966 to undertake his EM training as a Weapons Radar Specialist (WR). He was rated as an Able Seaman EMWR in July 1967, before joining the Daring Class Destroyer HMAS Duchess in refit at Garden Island Dockyard in Sydney. He would serve in Duchess from September 1967 until July 1968. In 1968 Ted volunteered for submarine service and within days of leaving Duchess he was in the United Kingdom under training at HMS Dolphin in Gosport. After qualifying as a submariner with the Royal Navy, Ted joined HMAS Ovens at Scotts’ Shipyard in Greenock, Scotland, as a member of the submarine’s commissioning crew. Ted discharged from the RAN in the early 1970s as a Leading Seaman moving to Strathpine in Queensland. He became a long standing and active member of the Queensland Branch of the SAA. Ted was hospitalised over Christmas and his health had deteriorated over the last month. He passed away on Wednesday the 29 th of January. At his request there will not be a funeral, his body will be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered at the Submariner’s Walk in Brisbane at a date to be advised.
