NATIONAL ANNUAL GENERAL
MEETING
OF THE ASSOCIATION
Presidents SUBCON
REPORT
Greetings to you all,
Well it is a week on since some of us gathered in Melbourne for SUBCON 2011.
From what I saw and heard a good time was had by all. Well Done to the
Victorian Branch for all their hard work leading up to and during SUBCON.
One event that rates a special mention was the Service of Remembrance held
at the Shrine of Remembrance on Monday morning. This was a particularly
moving ceremony and was well attended. Something perhaps that could be
considered for further SUBCONS?
The outcome of the AGM saw me re-elected as your President for a further
term, Jelly Barnes elected from the floor as VP, Greville (Snake) Knight
elected as Secretary, John Rana re-elected as Treasurer, Max Hardy as
Welfare and Health with Ray Kemp as Assistant, Peter Smith as Honorary
Historian and Woolly Hayton as the SAA webmaster. The Draft Constitution has
been accepted and after we make some punctuation and grammar corrections
will soon be on the web. This is a living document and we will continue to
refine it but it can now be done at the National Committee level with only
little input at the AGM level. There is to be a new SUBCON banner designed
and accepted for unveiling at next years SUBCON.
The National Committee meeting on Friday ran for almost three hours and had
we wanted we could have gone on much longer. One idea we are floating and
will probably use at the next SUBCON is continuing with the National
Committee meeting on the Friday (length dependant on agenda), AGM on the
Saturday after lunch (this will then allow the new executive to be
introduced to the membership at the ball that night) and another quick
National Committee meeting on the Sunday to discuss any issues arising from
the the AGM. Some subtle changes that will enable us to better serve you the
membership.
I would like to also take this opportunity to personally thank Woolly Hayton
for his work as the Acting VP and with the Draft Constitution over the last
twelve months and also Norm Williams for his work as the Acting Secretary,
SAA webmaster and his continued efforts with his own website, Up Periscope.
Well done to you both and thank you. I would also like to congratulate Boot
Hatfield on becoming our latest SAA Life Member. Well done and well deserved
Boot. Our thoughts are with both Slinger, Norm and Max Hardy during this
time whilst they deal with some health issues that are laying them low. Get
well soon guys and stay in touch.
There is a lot of work still to be done but that is why you have a National
Committee and your Executive. This is why, in future, items coming before
the AGM need to have been discussed at the branch level so that they can be
spoken to at the committee meeting on the Friday. No more surprises being
raised as other business as they ensure a disruptive AGM and inadequate
responses from the National Body. We have momentum and we need to keep
moving forward and not forgetting what we are all about and that is each
other and our families. Never forget your health, your families and your
buddies in boats.
Thank you all for having the faith in me to lead you for another term. I can
only promise to do my best in the best traditions of the SAA and I look
forward to interacting with you during this time. Of course I could not do
this without the special support of my wonderful partner Cath.
DBF.
Yours Aye
Darren Thompson
